INTERVENTION
YWCA believes that shelter is a critical, life-saving right.
When survivors and their children flee abuse, most have nowhere left to go. Also, the risk of lethality increases significantly when survivors attempt to leave their abusers. Therefore, it’s important that they have a safe space to heal and rebuild.
That’s why YWCA provides two safe, secure, trauma-informed shelters for survivors of intimate partner violence. These shelters provide immediate safety and protection, allowing survivors to work towards longer-term safety and stability by securing housing and income, pursuing protection orders or meeting other legal needs, and addressing the trauma of abuse through mental health services and referrals.

PREVENTION
One of our prevention programs includes Peaceful Solutions, a Restorative Practice Program.
Because of implicit bias and institutionalized/systematic racism in the US educational system, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students are less likely to graduate, obtain gainful employment, and achieve self-sufficiency. Therefore they are also more likely to become incarcerated and enter a life-long battle with the criminal justice system.
YWCA’s Peaceful Solutions program uses an evidence-based approach to resolve conflict, prevent harm, improve school culture, and increase student success by replacing ‘Zero Tolerance’ disciplinary policies that disproportionately impact BIPOC students.

TRAINING
As a part of YWCA’s mission to “promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all,” our subject-matter experts offer pieces of training specific to domestic violence and racial equity.
Our most popular piece of training is Toward Equity which encourages all to look at implicit bias and how it impacts us at an interpersonal, institutional, and systematic level, and equips participants with the knowledge to create a more equitable workplace.
We also offer training opportunities for first responders and service providers on:

Domestic Violence Crisis Intervention Training for Law Enforcement,
Addressing Unique Challenges with LGTBQ+ Survivors,
